Vps
Decided to write a bit about how things are going, I have not written much lately, so it’s time to change that. Over Christmas my VPS provider had some hardware issues - that caused the VM to become unrecoverable. I honestly did not mind - since I had backup of everything I needed, and the current VPS I had was running a really old debian version. Also it was a pain to keep things updated, since it was set up a long time ago, so after the VPS provider installed a new fresh VM for me - I then sat down to think about how I wanted to have things in the future.
So what I did was to install alma linux on a spare machine I have, then install docker - and use that to set up and test each service that I wanted. Spent some time learning that - once I had it set up the way I wanted I just moved the docker compose file over to my VPS and ran it there. Was a really nice way to deploy things.
Also - I got really tired of dealing with apache, that setup I had there was a pain in the ass to keep updated and reinstall, so I decided to ditch that and go for nginx instead, and I’m really glad I did that. Also the let’s encrypt addon worked really nice with it as well.
Also switched from wordpress to hugo. I got tired of dealing with a bloated website, I wanted to keep it as clean and easy as possible.
So all in all I’m very pleased with the current setup! Easy to maintain and so on.
